I'm on the same side with you. After 5 months, I am waiting to see the new version on App Store.

You can certainly copy and paste the shapes, so you can create a "map" which serves as your own gallery of shapes.

I have done this when I create images using features of NM and want to reuse them as the created images and not go through the process again.

On a related topic, it would be appealing to have a "custom" or "personal" Media File. Having an inventory of images that are specific to my work would be similar to the benefit noted above of having more shapes. Drag and drop to one Map is fine for ad hoc use of images, but not very efficient when using another instance of a facilitation map. It might be possible to build a Template that has one Map with the inventory of customized media items, but seems more straight forward if the Media Library would have this capability.  ;)

NovaMind 5 for Mac / Reusing custom shapes
« Last post by simoncurry24 on May 16, 2013, 06:11:05 pm »
I have created a custom shape that I want to reuse across several maps. But the new shape does appear to be saved anywhere. Is it just like a colour/style setting on a specific topic?
It would be a very powerful feature to be able to create a gallery of topic styles, including a custom shape if required, and be able to apply the new topic shape, text style, colour, shadow etc. anywhere in any map.

Any plans for something like this?

I'd like to add my vote to this request. One alternative would be to have custom shapes stored In a shape gallery that could be applied anywhere. Mind manager has something similar. I am using mind maps for modelling business processes. It's very good for it but not optimised so takes longer than it could. I think there is a niche here for you. If you added ability to merge two branches back into one, it would be perfect. This latter request has already been asked for elsewhere.

Hey Navigator72

Thanks for your thoughts on this. This Sunday I downloaded iThoughts again and have been experimenting with it. I did try that before, but gave up on it because of its apparent clunkiness. But I figured I'd give it another go. I guess you have been reading my mind.  ;)

I also have been thinking about running Windows with some virtualization solution, like Parallels, VMWare or VirtualBox. Besides spending lots of $$ on the software you mentioned, I would also need to get me some antivirus and firewall software. And then it all comes back to me how it is to live in a Windows world. That really turns me off.

So I must wait for Gideon and his gang to finally produce a feature-complete NM 5. Or keep muddling with (at least partly) hand drawn maps.

My Jung Type Index is not INTJ, it is ENFP.  :D

Thanks again,

Jake

Jake,

From your "order our of chaos" comment,  I take it you may also be an INTJ in the Jung typology context. My work is somewhat similar with teams at the "fuzzy front end" of new initiatives. This may not be feasible for you, but I have been ambi-operating system for the past year on my MacBook Pro. Moutain Lion for Mac applications and Parallels / Windows 7. I've been able to use NM5 Win for flexitopics and Persenter (before Mac version was complete). This is a bit costly - several hundred $ for Parallels + Windows Home Premium. But I use several Windows only power-tools (Tableau for data visualization, for instance). I agree that NM is the premier MM package among those I've seen.
BTW - recently tried iThougths on iPhone and iPad for first pass / draft maps (sitting in restaurant or conference setting). These moved (emailed attachments) nicely to NM for editing and presentation. Other than strange default colors in iThought, this was a positive experience.  :D

Hi Learning K, thanks for your views in this. I use maps during brain storming sessions and discussions. They start out very messy and usually contain an overload of branches, and sub- and sub-sub-branches. Maps can be extremely unstructured. From there we start pruning and (re)structuring. That may take a long time and many sessions. We keep and reuse all versions whenever that is needed. We hardly ever create a "final" version. In the very few cases we had one, we keep it on file and (often) forget about it. For us, the end result is not the map, but the collective understanding of what we need to do or create to be effective in our work. This may concern all kinds of things that we do: research, develop and implement services or products, and so on.

I am an admirer of your smart and beautiful maps, maybe I will ever get around to try my hands on something other than creating (some) order out of chaos ;)

Jake
