NovaMind 5 for Mac / Re: Reposition Initial Topic?
« on: August 27, 2012, 01:48:34 am »
Hi.  The way I think about it is that the map centers itself when you "fit map".  If there is only one word, etc., it goes in the middle.  As soon as you add something, the center point changes, like a center of gravity.  As you build your map down, the main topic goes up -- relatively.

So trick your map.  Put an image or invisible text box or something below and then you can work down the map with a mostly blank page and your main topic title at the top.

I just tried it.  I started a map and then dragged a new topic to the bottom and kept dragging until the original map topic moved to the top.  On the new topic, I took out the stroke and fill and changed the word topic to an X (so I could find it).  With the subtopics set to be arranged top to bottom you can add from the main topic to your heart's content and the little X stays at the bottom -- sort of as a place guide.

Would that work for you?

Can you create an image and post just the image as you would any other jpg or png?

NovaMind 5 for Mac / Is it a floating topic or shape?
« on: August 01, 2012, 09:17:19 am »
Hi.  I am still occasionally mystified when topics fly far to one side, or way up or down, when I let go of a teensy drag of an item.  I have learned things to do, such as be sure layout is ignored with shapes, or all items are moved if the topic to which they are linked is moved.

Floating topics cause much more layout change than "ignored" shapes, but they can look identical.  Both can have text, images, hyperlinks and lines, fills, effects.

Sometimes I pick one and sometimes the other and do my design and then confuse myself when things fly away.  That is when I try after everything else, to see if I have a topic instead of a shape.  I can cut and paste and change it quickly, so that is not an issue.

The issue is that since they look alike, how do I know what I have?  I notice that if I click on one, some show dotted link-type lines and some don't.  Is that it?  Also, if I click on the box, I can add a boundary to a topic, but not a shape, right?

Is there any other way to tell?  Maybe I have already answered my question, but if I missed something, I would love to know.

Thanks, Gideon.

I have not had much experience with PDF but am learning to really appreciate it.  The png images and PDFs produce beautiful reproductions of the maps.

NovaMind 5 for Windows / Re: how to write exponent?
« on: July 14, 2012, 12:18:37 am »
Because I don't have Windows, I don't want to give you the wrong info.  Last time I answered a Windows question with a Mac answer, I learned how different the programs are.

This much I will say, in case it works.  We have a tool bar across the top of the screen when we are working with a program.  The superscript is in the Format Menu of the main toolbar, not the Font section of the NovaMind map-specific toolbar.  It is on a list with kerning, ligature, baseline -- under baseline.

I hope someone on NM staff or someone with Windows can help further.

I have the Mac version and it is located in the Font Selection of the Format Menu under Baseline.  You get several choices and the one you want is "superscript"

You have to highlight the text or number first and then you can move it up or down.

Try to locate these words in your Help Index.

NovaMind 5 for Mac / Re: Pdf clickable hyperlinks: another question
« on: July 07, 2012, 02:48:54 am »
Well, I am confused by your explanation -- sorry.

I have two websites with NM5 maps (one is being converted from NM4 so is "in process").  One of them has an Index of the other maps and the PDF of the Index has links to PDFs of the other maps.  I suppose the individual maps can have links back to the Index or to other maps.  I intend to add this feature as soon as the conversion is done.

It make take several steps to post it on a website.  I have had to do this with one site because of site software:  first I post the map images and PDFs separately.  Then I grab the URLs for the PDFs and link the images directly to them -- the result is a map image which clicks to its PDF.  It takes two steps to make it simple, but do-it-yourself publishing is pretty easy.

I do not understand absolute and relative linking.

If this is not what you meant, I hope I didn't make you more confused.

NovaMind 5 for Windows / Re: Clickable PDFs
« on: July 04, 2012, 02:42:00 am »
I do not know the answer, but this much is true about the Mac version:  there are two kinds of hyperlinks and only one is clickable on the PDF version.  When I first tried it, it didn't work, until I learned this.

We have an inline hyperlink, in which you highlight text, right click (on a Mac it is something equivalent to right click) and select "add hyperlink".  Then you cut and paste the URL into a dialogue box rather than drag it to the topic.  The clickable link is at the highlighted text, not the icon.

So in the PDF version, click on the highlighted text, not on the icon.

If the Windows version is similar, then this is how it works.

NovaMind 5 for Mac / Re: Two more questions
« on: July 01, 2012, 08:14:22 am »
Actually, my problem was a little different than that.  I have only the DRAWING inspector opened (having closed the other two).  There are 5 features at the top and the TEXT is the last one -- as your screenshot clearly shows.  When they are all opened the text is at the bottom and cannot even be seen.  After I wrote my question, I went back and stared at it.  All the features except TEXT had a lock on them.  I clicked on each lock until it went away and then clicked TEXT and it appeared at the top.

I do not understand this feature and hope someone will explain its purpose as it must be good for something.  I am presently working mostly with NM4 conversions so the features may lock themselves in the translation.

Thanks on the reply and confirming the other answer.

NovaMind 5 for Mac / Two more questions
« on: July 01, 2012, 03:32:47 am »
Two things keep making me nuts.  I figure them out, and then I cannot figure out how I did them.  If someone will answer me here, then I can refer back to the answers the next time I get confused.

1.  The TEXT function of the DRAWING INSPECTOR is at the bottom.  Sometimes I cannot get close to seeing it, let alone alter the text (change color, center it, etc.)  If I close and reopen the INSPECTOR it is still so far down the page that I cannot get to it.  Other times, most times, it is right there, near the center and I can use it.

What am I doing differently?  How can I get to it?

2.  How do I move a map which is second or third map of a document, onto another map where it becomes the new document.  I know I can rename it and delete it from the original document.  In NM4 we use to drag it to a new map and it would copy itself, and I know it is different in NM5.

Is there a way to do it?

Thanks in advance, especially for the first answer.

NovaMind 5 for Windows / Clickable PDFs
« on: July 01, 2012, 02:28:46 am »
In the Mac version, we can share clickable PDFs.  This is wonderful and has allowed me to share maps, and also move hyperlinked maps from NMConnect to two different websites.  I do consultations and can send a map which has clickable hyperlinks to people without NM Software.  I love it.  They love it.  They can do their own research from my link-leads.

This is a vast improvement over NM4 and has turned me from a critic of NM5 into a fan.

Yeah, some maps take forever to export to PDF.  And you must use the inline hyperlink which requires cut-and-paste, not dragging the link on.  But you get more on a map because the hyperlink icon takes up a line and space and the inline hyperlinks take up no extra space.

I haven't tried embedding anything else.

NovaMind 5 for Mac / Re: NM5 for Mac slows down
« on: June 28, 2012, 02:28:37 am »
I am busy converting maps from NM4 to NM5.  The maps are link-heavy, but I don't know how you define large.  Often as I am clicking away, it stops and I just sit and wait for it to catch up with itself.

I assume this slowness is from all the hidden code in the layout engine.  I am asking it to do a lot.  I like the finished product.  For me, the wait is not a deal-breaker.  And I don't have the fastest Mac in the west.

But if it did go faster, I would not complain...

NovaMind 5 for Mac / Re: How to Export / Print single topic?
« on: June 28, 2012, 02:21:57 am »
One thing you could do is click on the topic and select from the "reorganize" menu the option to create a separate map from the topic.  It will appear as its own map which you may print.

I just tried it and it works, but the look of the topic changed a little.  I didn't try to keep it from changing by modifying it, but it may not be an issue or may be easily fixed.

At any rate, you don't have to save the new topic map if you don't want it.

NovaMind 5 for Mac / Adding frame or border?
« on: June 21, 2012, 02:47:10 am »
Hi all,

If this exists in NM5, I haven't found it.  I am trying to frame some maps, put a border around them, so I can organize images of them a little more easily.  We could do it in NM4 at printing time, but I haven't discovered it in NM5, or perhaps asked the right questions in Help.

If I am missing it, let me know.  I figured out a workaround -- a layout-ignored, unfilled shape, enlarged -- but perhaps there is a simple way to do it.

Thanks.
Kathy
