NovaMind 5 for Windows / Re: Suggest add more Shapes
« on: May 17, 2013, 12:13:08 am »
On a related topic, it would be appealing to have a "custom" or "personal" Media File. Having an inventory of images that are specific to my work would be similar to the benefit noted above of having more shapes. Drag and drop to one Map is fine for ad hoc use of images, but not very efficient when using another instance of a facilitation map. It might be possible to build a Template that has one Map with the inventory of customized media items, but seems more straight forward if the Media Library would have this capability.  ;)

Jake,

From your "order our of chaos" comment,  I take it you may also be an INTJ in the Jung typology context. My work is somewhat similar with teams at the "fuzzy front end" of new initiatives. This may not be feasible for you, but I have been ambi-operating system for the past year on my MacBook Pro. Moutain Lion for Mac applications and Parallels / Windows 7. I've been able to use NM5 Win for flexitopics and Persenter (before Mac version was complete). This is a bit costly - several hundred $ for Parallels + Windows Home Premium. But I use several Windows only power-tools (Tableau for data visualization, for instance). I agree that NM is the premier MM package among those I've seen.
BTW - recently tried iThougths on iPhone and iPad for first pass / draft maps (sitting in restaurant or conference setting). These moved (emailed attachments) nicely to NM for editing and presentation. Other than strange default colors in iThought, this was a positive experience.  :D

It seems that you want a link that will bypass the hierarchy (parent / child / peer) that's inherent in the NM5 structure. In that sense, it does not seem " ... the same way what everything else is linked". I am not familiar with any "many to many" mind mapping packages. Would be interested if you find something.

General / Small Suggestion - Hide Tabs
« on: March 12, 2013, 11:08:51 pm »
NM Pro and Platinum allow multiple map tabs in a single document. You can create, move, rename, etc.
What about an option to Hide a tab. This would be similar to hiding tabs in Excel workbook.
I facilitate workshops using NM. Some of the prep work is done in tabs, but I'd prefer that the names of the tabs are not visible during the workshop (i.e. "Competing Products", or "Input from Boss". Today, I just give them cryptic names "Other Stuff", but it would be more convenient to Hide / Unhide the tab.

Reaction from others?

Working in a similar manner, I find two things helpful:
1) The master Map, with internal hyperlinks to other topics
2) hyperlinks to other project documents. Typically, I have a running Excel workbook and PowerPoint document that also contain project related material

In a few cases, I use Merlin project management software for designing and tracking work plans, but generally the internal schedule / responsibility assignments in NM are sufficient.

Intriguing use of mindmap as visual table of contents. I can see several applications in my work. Thank you. :)

Thanks for the dialog. I'm a fan of SnagIt for this type need. It seems best to let the NovaMind crew focus on intricacies of mind mapping and layout ... leaving this kind of graphics design to specialized applications.

NovaMind 5 for Mac / Re: Flexitopics?

Good to have this update. For now, I'm pleased to be able to run NM Windows under Parallels for those times that I need Flexitopics. I can compose in Mac version, then create the flexitopics in the near final version. Looks like this workaround will become un-necessary sometime in 2013. ;)

I've wondered whether there's any research or psychological basis for the use of flexitopics in mind mapping? Aesthetics and similar explanation falls into the realm of personal preference. I suspect there are some fields and applications where this form helps, some where it may distract, and others where the impact on communication effectiveness or stimulating understanding are neutral. It might be instructive to survey, or better yet, count the portion of NM5 Windows mind-maps that actually use flexitopics. I recall seeing an analysis a couple years ago regarding Apple's "coverflow" view of albums. Initially intriguing and aesthetic to many users ... but over time hardly used to navigate among iTunes content.

12DEC2012 Update: I note that "coverflow" has been removed from the latest version of iTunes (V 11) in favor of another interface. It remains on iPad and iPhone. Apple did litigate and was fined initially for infringement. Does NM run any risk of infringement on flexitopics? Would be a shame if it was litigated or pulled after all this work and time ...?

NovaMind 5 for Mac / Re: Scrolling and resizing

Inspired by the comment about Apple mouse, I tried just using the trackpad on the MBPro. The following works:
2 finger drag will scroll up / down and left / right
alt/option and 2 fingers will resize

This will take a bit of practice, but seems adequate to task, and pretty close to what can be achieved on Windows version with mouse and track wheel.

hmm, I have the Apple Mouse and the Touchpad, with both I can move the map and zoom in and out. Try ALT+wheel it should zoom in and out. Moving of map is on the Apple Mouse just moving a finger on the surface, on some mouses you can move the wheel right and left, have you tried?

Thx. This mouse does not have left / right tilt feature. I have tried every combination of fn, ctrl, alt/option, cmd and shift, I believe. Doesn't result in any movement of the map.

NovaMind 5 for Windows / Re: Create New Mind Map from Tab
« on: September 24, 2012, 11:27:55 pm »
You can just drag and drop the tabs between NovaMind windows. So, create a new document and then drag the tab from the old one to the new. This will create a copy of that Mind Map. I know it's not very obvious  :-\

Thanks Patrick. Elegant if not obvious ... I suspect there are other similarly attractive navigation features. Maybe worth a post here or a tabulation [including Mac Windows or Both] in the online Help.  ;)

do you use a Apple Mouse on Mac?

I use a Microsoft Bluetooth mouse [2 button and scroll wheel] on MBPro running Parallels so I have NM5 on both Mac and Windows environment.

NovaMind 5 for Windows / Create New Mind Map from Tab
« on: September 19, 2012, 01:39:06 am »
How can I create a new mind map from one of many tabs in a current Map? I have tried:
1. Save As with a new name, then delete all but one of the tabs
2. Copy the Main Topic from the Tab of interest, create a new map, select Start Here and Paste the map that had been copied.

Item 1 works ok, but it's tedious if I start with a map that has 10 or 12 Tabs
Item 2 places the map as a Sub topic of the Start Here ... main topic. I can re-Graft all the sub topics to the Start Here ... and rename it, but that's also tedious.

I'm migrating to NM5Mac from NM5Win with the latest release. In NM5Win, you can scroll around the map by Right-Button and then move the mouse. You can zoom in / out using Right-Click+mouse wheel.
Are there any equivalents on NM5Mac, realizing the Mac approach to mouse buttons is different? Would prefer something more efficient than the horizontal and vertical scroll bars.
