Hi Grid,
maybe you take a look into the training video http://www.novamind.com/blog/2011/tutorials/windows/layout/.
In the Mac version you can directly create a topic in between the 2 others as you wish. In the Win version I didn't see this possibility, so you should create another subtopic on the first subtopic, so that the new one is parallel on second level. Than you graft the existing first 2nd level subtopic to the new 2nd level topic (grafting is shown in the video, take the subtopic on the small red branch symbol and move it).
Have fun with NM.

good suggestion, I'm just today preparing a workshop and thought about the other tabs in the map file and possible irritations out of them. I don't want to put it in a new file as it belongs to the same project.
Did you send the suggestion to NM service team? That is the the way they would like to get it.

as your question is posted in the General section, I wanted to check if we are talking about Windows or Mac.
I have no experience with NM4, I started with V5, but I assume there are differences as the print engine got some improvements during Version 5 lifecycle. So maybe some of the NM4 users may be able to help.
Maybe you open a new topic in the NovaMind 4 section of the forum (and not in NM5 part) and there in the Mac part.

Hi,
welcome in the forum.
Use the graft function (the little red symbol for a branch) and not the move (4 arrows).
Have a look to the tutorials (http://www.novamind.com/blog/category/tutorials-novamind-5-for-mac/) there the behavior is explained.

Hi Kathy,
as WindyCity I played a little with the new theme editor, but didn't phase any problems with the version at all (beside one minor translation error). This version seems to be very stable, so I think there is only a very minor risk using this beta.

Hi bernie,
clickable hyperlinks are posible in pdf export. This thread is quite old and such feature is available now. See http://www.novamind.com/forum/index.php/topic,1246.0.html Topic #8 where Learning K has described how to proceed.

have you bought NM at NM Store? Than you should upgrade to 5.4 or even 5.5 Beta which runs quite stable.
If you bought in AppStore of Apple you must wait. According to a post of Gideon they are working to get the Update there.

I don't have this experience. But maybe you can give some more information, which verion of NM5 do you use? Which CPU, memory size? Have you checked the activity monitoring during your problems to see if there is unusual CPU load or any competing load on the machine?
Nevertheless I recommend that you contact the competent NM support and send them the map with problems and ask for support.

Just tried it a minute ago, I did in a VM with Windows adn NM5 for Windows (as I have Mac machines only). All the shortcuts in your list (beside Insert, I don't have Insert on the keyboard, so I cannot use it) do work without any problem.
Maybe you should contact NM support if they know situations where are problems with the shortcuts.

I think Gideon is right with the reasons for priorisation in his explanation, even if I would like to get Flexitopics asap (but I have my workaround with the VM and Win version of NM5)
@Cypocryphy, I think the example you picked is produced with a former version of NM. The Windows version of NM5 does support Flexitopics already, so it is possible to produce such maps with NM5, but we Mac users have to wait to get it native.

Just simple, load NM5 from the NM webpage , you can try for 30 days before purchasing. So you can check if it fulfils your needs.
