Line length doesn't save

I'm a new user and enjoying the program, but I'm wondering why when I adjust branch line lengths and save the document, and then reopen the document, the line lengths are back to their default lengths? I want to make the lines shorter. Am I missing some setting?

Please tell me I'm doing something wrong.  This is really frustrating. Sometimes the line/branch length will be about half the length I set after saving/reopening, and sometimes it will just reset to some long default value. It's like I don't have any real control over the layout. I'm using free layout, not any assisted mode.

For the record in case other people are looking at this - this person contacted technical support and it turned out that the Mind Map had become corrupted on his machine, but we were able to repair it.
