Transfer over hyperlinks from MM to a PDF file format
« on: December 10, 2009, 05:15:07 am »
I have been creating some MMs that contains hyperlinks to webpages. I have also used the export option in order to convert the MM to PDF or JPG files and share it with other people. It would be cool to find a way to keep the links after the MM is converted to a PDF, so people can still use those hyperlinks. This will really expand the possibilities to share maps with these capabilties.

You are singing my song!  Thanks for asking and I know you speak for many others.  I have found a workaround for maps which you can make public, but there is no way to share a private map unless someone has the software.

MindJet allowed it (hint, hint, Cathy) and maybe NovaMind can figure it out and do it even better.

It is on our to-do list. Unfortunately this one addition means using a completely different technology to achieve the end result, so it is a non-trivial thing.

Thank you for your replies. Just to keep my lights on.  Is there a way to create a viewer for NM MMs?I know you are fully focus on NM5 release but I hope in the future would be considered a small software that allows to see MMs and keep links and maybe retractile branches. I have used similar viewers for MindManager and VISIO and that is really convenient. I know people can install the SW and use it as viewer after the trial expires but in some sharing conditions that isn't a good option believe me. Well just a feedback from a Customer that likes your product very much  ;)

Why is using NovaMind after the trial has expired not a usable solution for you?

I will answer for me and, hopefully, Erick and others will also answer.  I do maps for individuals with health problems.  I cannot ask each of them to download the software just to read a personal map -- even if the function of the viewer works perfectly.  I can post generic maps, and I hope my disclaimer is adequate that the maps are only generic and educational, not prescriptive.  But I may only have a one-time linked map for them to do their own follow-ups.

I can imagine that anyone who does research for personal reasons as a consultant -- health, financial, legal, or even very unique such as a specialized field of interest -- would not post on Connect or ask a client/customer to add downloading any (even wonderful) software to the consultation results.

For the public maps, I was able to create a website and the images on the site (jpeg versions) link back to the posted linked maps on Connect.

Erick, I am curious about your need, if you would care to share it.

A viewer is just the application with the editing capabilities disabled or removed, and it would require just as much effort to install that as it would to install the application. So what's the difference between them downloading the program and installing it, or downloading the viewer and installing it? Surely it's better for them to have the capabilities to try out the editing during the 30 day trial, and it makes the whole process of choosing what to download easier because you don't have yet another thing for them to download, and if they want to purchase it later on, they don't have another download to install just to get up and running - all they do is enter the license key.

This comment goes back to the need for live hyperlinks, not the viewer question:

Some document sharing sites, such as Slideshare and YouTube, allow the user to mark an item as private. The user can still get a link, and share it with chosen individuals, but the item is not available publicly.

I know one purpose of NovaMind Connect is to share our beautiful maps with the world and get others' comments, but there are times when a private map is appropriate, as Kathy has articulated.

Implementing this privacy feature on NovaMind Connect would reduce the pressure on NovaMind to develop the capability to export PDFs or HTMLs with live links, and might be much easier to implement. Please consider it!

Thanks,
Karen

I didn't follow up this post for a while however resuming this topic, I do agree with both statements
from Kathy and Karen about the need of a sharing solution besides the installation of NM5 as a viewer or
public upload the maps to NM connect. I have been gaining positive confidence with NM, first with NM4 and now NM5
even though I understand this tool have some features still under development or tuning. I am moving from
a reserved mood about NM5 to a very satisfy mode in terms of performance and software capabilities however I still
think that for many reasons I hope the Novamind team consider to include an alternative solution (for sharing)
on the future plans for those like me who see not viable or practical, use novamind connect or ask people to
install the whole NM software. In my case restricted confidentiality policies makes difficult to share maps
related to work on a public site and distribution of the software might not be a good option either. I want to
encourage you and cheer up Novamind team for the great improvements and innovative ideas you have presented and just
wish you can keep the channels open to listen to the people that benefit from this wonderful software.

Best Regards

Erick

Thanks Erick, it is on our schedule to look into all the possible solutions for sharing once we have got all the features of NovaMind 5 completed, and assess what would be the best solution to deliver to suit peoples needs.
