have you had a look to the training videos in the blog section? http://www.novamind.com/blog/

re 1: depends on the OS Mac or Win (Mac: Shift+Mouse click; Win: CTRL+Mouse click)
re 3: there are special tutorials on the formatting concepts

watched then often - thanks

on the select multiple - was getting the large blue shade box
but expected each selected item to APPEAR selected  (eg with handles)
but i can now see - the lines are a little bolder
and you lose right click context menu - but I can made edits using the menus !

ref : arrange front back  / deduced must have also selected the target topic/sub-topic

still having trouble making new sub-topics follow my existing for mat command

Bring to front / send to back applies to shapes - please see the section on shapes in the documentation.

found it
but had to 'deduce' that I had to 'select more than one before could give assignemts
which makes sense as they are relative to one another
and
big question
you referred to documentation?
did I miss that?
all I found were video tutorials (which are great)
but still a cumbersome form of 'documentation'
is there a written HELP section I am missing ?

Oops, sorry. Thought you were on Mac. Full Windows documentation is not available yet. If you want to look at the Mac documentation, it's here: http://www.novamind.com/help/novamind5/mac/top.html and the concepts are the same, even if the user interface is different.
