Multiple Maps in Document
« on: September 26, 2007, 11:49:08 am »
I'm a prof mapping an entire course. I want to set up a map for each lecture within a single document.

Was going fine until I ran out of room on the tab bar. I can click the arrow to see more maps than fit on the tab bar, but I can't (a) delete the maps that don't appear with their own tab or (b) reorder the tabs that don't fit on the screen. Even when I choose to view the entire document, I can't, for example, right-click on a particular map to delete it, or rearrange the maps in a new order (like I could with the slide-sorter function in PowerPoint, for instance). This is a major pain. Any solutions?

While I'm asking, actually, now that I have more than 5 or 6 maps in a document, opening, saving, printing, and most tasks have become extremely slow (on my new 15" MBP). Disappointing.

If there's no solution, moderators can feel free to move this post to the suggestion forum.

We have the tab issue on our to do list. Just a question - would people prefer to have the tabs enhanced to address these issues (and perhaps with a mouseover map preview) or would you prefer a view like the "Page Thumbnails" option in Pages '08?

Also we have been doing some work on improving performance, and have more to do. Hopefully you would find that release 4.0.11 reduced the memory usage of images on your Mind Map by almost 50% and increased the speed of moving branches with images on them significantly, as well as making resizing large images quicker, etc.

We will continue to work on performance, and have some significant work starting in that area in about a couple of months, which will both open the way for some exciting new features as well as speeding up various aspects of the program.

No preference as to WHAT the solution is (though thumbnails sounds good - as long as it isn't memory intensive), but would like to see it solved ASAP. For now, I'm pretty much paralyzed at 6 maps in a document. Not sure what I'll do at this point.

I'm a prof mapping an entire course. I want to set up a map for each lecture within a single document.

Just a thought ... could you split the course up into smaller "modules"? Then you could have a master document that hyperlinks to the relevant part if required. It would keep the file size smaller, and may even make it load faster.

If it's not what you want, ignore me - my students do!

That's a great idea. Never used hyperlinking in novamind before. But in theory I could link to a document (with multiple maps) each "lesson" or "chapter" from the syllabus.

Of course, that still may not solve my problem of running out of space on the tab bar.

As a matter of interest, I've just been playing with the latest version of Safari, and they have the same problem with the tabs...not saying that it's OK to have the problem, but interesting to note that Apple haven't solved it...

We do have it on our to do list, but it's a non-trivial fix.

Well I think it is better if you will use the multiple maps for your lecture. Just explain it simple and clear. This will make your lecture easier to understand by your audience.
