How the brain orchestrates its transitions from one oscillatory pattern to another, or from one stage of sleep to another, is not clearly understood. Nevertheless, communication along most neuronal pathways involves ligands or substances which increase or decrease the probability that a signal from one neuron will be sent to other neurons.
