Parts of the Brain

Cerebrum
The large rounded structure of the brain occupying most of the cranial cavity, divided into two cerebral hemispheres that are joined at the bottom by the corpus callosum. It controls and integrates motor, sensory, and higher mental functions, such as thou
Thalamus
A large ovoid mass of gray matter situated in the posterior part of the forebrain that relays sensory impulses to the cerebral cortex
Hypothalamus
The part of the brain that lies below the thalamus, forming the major portion of the ventral region of the diencephalon and functioning to regulate bodily temperature, certain metabolic processes, and other autonomic activities
Midbrain
Tectum
A rooflike structure in the dorsal part of the midbrain
Tegmentum
A part of the midbrain consisting of white fibers running lengthwise through gray matter
Hindbrain
Cerebellum
The trilobed structure of the brain, lying posterior to the pons and medulla oblongata and inferior to the occipital lobes of the cerebral hemispheres, that is responsible for the regulation and coordination of complex voluntary muscular movement as well
Pons Varolli
A band of nerve fibers on the ventral surface of the brain stem that links the medulla oblongata and the cerebellum with upper portions of the brain
Medulla
The inner core of the brain
Parts of the Heart
Aorta
The main trunk of the systemic arteries, carrying blood from the left side of the heart to the arteries of all limbs and organs except the lungs
Aortic valve
A heart valve comprising three flaps which guards the passage from the left ventricle to the aorta and prevents the backward flow of blood
Bicuspid Valve
The heart valve preventing back flow of blood from the left ventricle to the left atrium
Cardiac septem
The thin partition or membrane that divides the cavities the heart
Left atrium
The left upper chamber of the heart that receives blood from the pulmonary veins
Left ventricle
The chamber on the left side of the heart that receives the arterial blood from the left atrium and contracts to force it into the aorta
Pulmonary artery
An artery that carries venous blood from the right ventricle of the heart to the lungs
Pulmonary valve
A valve consisting of three semilunar cusps situated between the right ventricle and the pulmonary trunk
Pulmonary vein
A vein that carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart
Right atrium
The right upper chamber of the heart that receives blood from the venae cavae and coronary sinus
Right ventricle
The chamber on the right side of the heart that receives venous blood from the right atrium and forces it into the pulmonary artery
Tricuspid valve
The three-segmented valve of the heart that keeps blood in the right ventricle from flowing back into the right atrium.
