Special note about screenwriting in NovaMind 5

The screenwriter is available in the Platinum edition of NovaMind for Mac. There are currently no plans to have screenwriting capabilities in the Windows version of NovaMind 5.

The video below is created based on the NovaMind 4 version of the screenwriter, but the functionality in version 5 is much the same as what is shown here. There is a tutorial video explaining the screenwriting feature of NovaMind in more detail, as well as complete documentation.

What does the Screenwriting Module do?

Many professionals in the live theatre, movie and TV industries already use Mind Mapping and brainstorming techniques to generate and develop story ideas, characters, organize aspects of production and more – but what about something to help capture script ideas during those brainstorming and planning sessions? Without the ability to record these, ideas that have a lot of potential could miss being developed into something brilliant, or even worse, forgotten altogether.

NovaMind Platinum enables Scripts to be attached on any topic on the Mind Map to record all of your ideas – the character names, their dialogue, camera angles, scene settings and more! By simply clicking on the script button you can start typing your screenplay straight away while NovaMind formats your text according to the industry standards.

Screenwriters know that the formatting can mean the difference between acceptance or rejection. NovaMind makes this easy for you by handling the formatting while you, the writer, concentrate on the important stuff – the content!

"I just wanted to congratulate you on starting to address the need for a truly structured screenwriting program.

I am a professional movie director and screenwriter, and recently wrote the movie SYLVIA, starring Gwynneth Paltrow.

As a long-standing and very disillusioned user of other screenwriting applications, I am delighted to see the way NovaMind is going. I already structure all of my scripts in NovaMind and am enormously looking forward to using the app to do much more of the work on my next script".

You can write your complete movie/play/TV script in NovaMind and see the screenwplay take shape both from a visual storyboarding perspective and the actual screenplay. If required, reordering of parts of the screenplay is easy by grafting or reordering the branches with the portions of script attached to them.

NovaMind can also export your scripts into industry standard formats like RTF and FCF to be shared or imported into Movie Magic, Final Draft, text edit, MS Word and many other programs.

How do I write a screenplay in NovaMind?

The Screenwriting Interface

The beauty of a screenwriting program is that it will format your script while you think of the important things – like your script content. NovaMind formats according to movie industry standards for font, margin settings, line spacing, mores, continueds, section standards and page numbering.

H?┬ęctor Cabello ReyesHéctor Cabello Reyes has now become the most filmed screenwriter in Europe, with 3 feature movies in various stages of production. He uses NovaMind to write his screenplays, and also used NovaMind to write the screenplay with which he won the top prize for screenwriting in Europe, as he says:

"My modesty suffers when I say this, but the prize I got is the highest in France, and thus in Europe (for France is Europe’s biggest film market and producer).

It’s the "Centre National de la Cinématographie (CNC) – Aide à l’Ecriture" (Cinema National Center’s Screenwriting Aid), which is a money-dotated prize, rewarding 5 screenplays among 80 scripts, all written by professional screenwriters, i.e. writers who already had a screenplay produced and released.

So it’s a very important prize, because it says that, this year, your screenplay’s among the best of all the professional ones.

And, well, among the 5 screenplays, mine got first, with jury’s congratulations ! I’m pretty proud of it !"

It’s intuitive interface will cycle through the script elements in logical sequence – action, character name, parenthetical, dialogue, transition, scene etc. By using your return and tab keys NovaMind will progress to the next logical element to follow what you have just typed.

Text completions save re-typing of character names, scene headings, int/ext. and time of day. All this is in addition to the standard features of NovaMind Platinum, for brainstorming, visual storyboarding, and planning.

It’s time for you to take your screenwriting to the next level!

I’m VERY interested in the Script-writing applications of Mind Mapping – especially if NovaMind continues to be the only MM-Software that addresses this. Is it possible to let me know when this functionality will be out with the latest version?

This will be a very high priority item once the v5.0 for Mac has been released.

I was very excited when I happened upon this article, as screenwriting is one of the key applications I plan to use mindmaps to work on. Imagine my disappointment upon noting that this feature won’t be supported on the Windows version of the software!

Is it possible that the Windows version of Novamind will receive this capability in the future, or is there a fundamental technical limitation in the Windows operating system that presents insurmountable complications, prohibiting any possible development of Scriptmapping capability indefinitely?

Kind regards,

As per the content of the article, we do not plan to develop a Windows version of the screenwriting plugin.

I am very much looking forward to the release of the screenmapping module. When can we expect it? I don’t have v4, just a much older one. And I’ve been using version 5 for a while now, hoping you will soon release it.

It is currently in active development. We hope to release a beta within the next few weeks.

Ryan March 9, 2013 at 3:32 am

Do we have a date for the release?

Gideon March 14, 2013 at 10:21 am

Aargh, still caught up in debugging, sorry. One significant bug solved 2 days ago and another yesterday, but still a few that need to be mopped up before releasing the beta. It’s our top priority, and we’re working on it right now…
